Arabidopsis Floral Mutants: S to Z

If you would like to add your favorite floral mutant to this page, please contact the Fletcher lab.
stm-1
stm-1
SHOOT MERISTEMLESS: Affects floral and apical meristem development. Encodes a homeobox gene similar to Knotted-1 of maize (Long et al., Nature 1996). Maps to chr. 1.

stm-1: Isolated by EMS in L-er. Strong allele: mutants lack embryonic apical meristem. Sometimes forms ectopic stems; never forms flowers. Male and female sterile. Maintained as heterozygous stock. (Barton and Poethig, Development 1993). Phenotype suppressed in ecotypes other than L-er. Lesion: Glu to stop, before homeodomain (Long et al., Nature 1996).

sup-1
sup-1
SUPERMAN: Floral cadastral gene that affects third and fourth whorls. Encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor (Sakai et al., Nature 1995). Maps to the middle of chr. 3.

sup-1: Isolated by EMS in L-er. Strong allele. Many extra stamens, reduced carpel tissue, usually unfused. Also ovule defects. Slight semidominance: plants heterozygous for sup occasionally have flowers with 3 carpels. Male fertile, severely reduced female fertility (Bowman et al., Development 1992; Shultz et al., Plant Cell 1991). Lesion: Try22 to stop (Sakai et al., Nature 1995).

tsl-1
tsl-1
TOUSLED: Affects many aspects of plant developent, including leaf and organ morphology, flowering time, and organ number. Encodes a serine/threonine kinase (Roe et al., Plant Cell 1993). Maps to the top half of chr. 5 near pi.

tsl-1: Isolated by T-DNA mutagenesis in Ws-2. Abnormal leaf morphology, flowers one week late, organ developmental defects, reduced organ number, especially petals and stamens. When crossed to L-er, extra petals are sometimes seen. Female sterile, male reduced fertile. Lesion: T-DNA insertion in intron 14 (Roe et al., Plant Cell 1993).

ufo-2
ufo-2
UNUSUAL FLORAL ORGANS: Affects number, arrangement, and identity of floral organs. Encodes a gene of unknown function (Ingram et al., Plant Cell 1995). Ortholog of FIMBRIATA in Antirrhinum. Maps to the top of chr. 1.

ufo-2: Isolated by EMS in L-er. Strong allele: Mosaic organs, reduced petal and stamen number, reduced male fertility, female fertile (Levin et al., Plant Cell 1995; Wilkinson and Haughn, Plant Cell 1995). Lesion: Gln262 to stop (Lee et al., Current Biology 1997).

wig-1
wig-1
WIGGUM: Affects apical and floral meristem size and floral organ number, also reduced germination and pleiotropic effects on vegetative development (Running et al., Development 1998). Allelic to Enhanced Response to Abcissic Acid (ERA1), encodes the beta subunit of farnesyltransferase (Zeigelhoffer et al., PNAS 2000). Maps to the top of chr. 5.

wig-1: Isolated by EMS of L-er. Extra organs in all whorls — ave 5 sepals, 5 petals, 6-7 stamens and 2-3 carpels. Male and female fertile.

wus-1
wus-1
WUSCHEL: Affects meristem maintenance (Laux et al., Development 1994). Encodes a putative homeodomain transcription factor distantly related to STM (Mayer et al., Cell 1998). Maps to chr. 2.

wus-1: Delayed production of organs from SAM, disorganized rosette, multiple inflorescences with ariel rosettes, less than a dozen flowers formed per inflorescence and flowers lack stamens and carpels. Female sterile and occasionally male fertile (Laux et al., Development 1994).
