One of the parents of the potential biofuel crop Miscanthus x giganteus (a sterile
triploid) is the diploid Miscanthus sinensis. M. sinensis is self-incompatible.
Self-incompatibility in grasses is controlled by 2 unlinked genes, S
and Z. We plan to map S and Z in M. sinensis,
and will test various methods to manipulate self-incompatibility. For more details,
see the EBI website,
under Research, Feedstock Development.
